They increase the likelihood of developing cancers, stroke. They also play a role in the development of other disorders including infectious diseases and liver cirrhosis.

Alcohol and drug use contribute to significant individual, family and societal problems including homicide, suicide, assault, accidents, injuries, violent crime aswell as other forms of impairment and death. Health care workers are well positioned to offer the front-line prevention, intervention and referral strategies
